PROJECT PLANNING

Ordering Architectural Film: Build a Cut List Before Buying

A net surface-area total is a useful starting point, but it is not an order quantity. Panel dimensions, finish direction, seams and available stock lengths determine how material can be allocated. Prepare a cut list before committing a commercial material order.

Measure Pieces, Not Only Total Area

Create one row per repeated panel type, with width, height, quantity and a reference matching the photos or drawings. Identify front faces, returns and separate pieces. State whether dimensions describe the visible face or the required cut blank. Let the installer determine preparation and edge allowances for the selected product rather than adding an arbitrary universal percentage.

Confirm Direction, Width and Joints

Record the exact manufacturer, series and pattern. Confirm the usable roll width and any directional or pattern-matching constraints before nesting pieces. A panel that fits by area may not fit across the roll in the required direction. Where a joint is needed, agree on its location and appearance before placing an order; manufacturer instructions govern the permitted installation detail.

Separate Stock Totals From Usable Cuts

A stock listing can show an aggregate length without confirming one continuous roll or a particular cut. Ask the supplier to confirm individual available lengths, purchasing units, minimum quantities and allocation. For repeated visible panels, discuss batch consistency and pattern continuity before combining stock from different sources. Availability and delivery timing remain separate confirmations.

Record Spare Material and Order Assumptions

Agree with the project team whether spare material is needed for a mockup, installation damage or later repairs. Keep it distinct from the planned installation allocation. Record the accepted cut list, selected finish, estimated order quantity, exclusions and who approves revisions. Recheck quantities when dimensions, seam positions or the finish direction change; do not assume an earlier estimate still applies.

Prepare Your Review Package

For supply review, send the pattern code, panel schedule, direction notes, delivery ZIP code, target date and whether continuous lengths are required. Use the cost guide for broader budgeting; this checklist focuses on the information needed to turn a surface schedule into a reviewable order.
