COMMERCIAL PROJECT GUIDE

Elevator modernization vs. decorative interior refinishing

One changes elevator equipment and operation. The other renews suitable visible cab surfaces. A clear boundary helps property teams plan the right scope and coordinate the right contractors.

1. Start with two different scopes

Elevator modernization generally concerns equipment or systems that affect operation, control, performance, safety, or code compliance. That work belongs with the property's qualified elevator contractor and the professionals responsible for the elevator system.

Decorative interior refinishing concerns suitable visible cab surfaces such as selected wall-panel faces. Architectural film can be considered when the existing component is appropriate to retain and the requested change is visual rather than mechanical or operational.

2. Know where the Atlas Finishes™ scope begins and ends

Atlas Finishes™ reviews decorative surfaces, finish direction, panel condition, joints, corners, trim, rails, access, preparation, and installation details. The proposed film and preparation must suit the actual substrate and intended use.

Atlas Finishes™ does not perform elevator controls, mechanisms, operating systems, safety devices, inspections, or modernization work. Decorative refinishing must not be presented as a substitute for required equipment service, repair, inspection, or code work.

3. Coordinate access before selecting an installation date

The property team should identify who controls elevator access, whether a cab must be taken out of service, and what protection or supervision is required. The elevator contractor may need to coordinate equipment-related access or requirements before decorative work begins.

Share the number of cabs, operating hours, approved access windows, panel photos, dimensions, existing damage, rails, trim, signage, and adjacent lobby finishes. Those details help separate the decorative scope from the elevator contractor's responsibilities.

4. Choose the right path for the actual problem

If the concern is reliability, controls, leveling, door operation, safety, inspection, or code compliance, contact the elevator contractor. If the equipment is being modernized, include decorative finishes in the broader coordination plan rather than treating them as an isolated decision.

If the cab operates as required and the goal is to renew suitable visible panels, document the existing surfaces and request a decorative refinishing review. Atlas Finishes™ can then discuss finish samples, preparation, edges, sequencing, and the limits of the proposed work.
