PROJECT PLANNING
Reception Desk Refinishing: Edges, Seams and Daily Use
The front of a reception desk may look like one simple surface. In use, it meets luggage, cleaning products, cables, signage and staff activity. A useful refinishing brief identifies those details before the final pattern is selected.
Separate the Front, Top and Working Surfaces
Mark exactly what should be resurfaced: vertical front panels, side returns, cabinet doors, kick areas or a separate countertop. Do not assume a product suitable for a vertical panel is appropriate for a working top. Record heat, spills, repeated contact and cleaning conditions for each area. Keep unsupported edges, unstable panels and damaged substrates visible in the review photographs.
Design the Finish Around Real Edges
Photograph outside corners, recessed panels, curved sections, toe kicks and the underside of exposed returns. Record where the proposed finish starts and stops. Product limits and the substrate geometry determine whether a continuous wrap, a planned joint or another detail can be considered. Ask for a representative edge sample rather than expecting every seam to disappear.
Review the Desk Under Its Own Lighting
Place physical samples beside the floor, wall and countertop finishes that will remain. Look from the guest approach as well as from behind the desk. Long horizontal surfaces can make grain direction and pattern repetition noticeable. Use a larger mockup when the viewing distance, sheen or adjacent finishes make a small swatch difficult to judge.
Agree on Protection and Future Maintenance
Share the actual cleaning-product list and typical contact points before approval. Confirm which desk equipment, signs and accessories must be moved by the owner or another trade. For handover, retain the selected pattern code, approved cleaning guidance and photographs of accepted details. Future repair discussions are easier when the original material and the limits of each panel are documented.
Prepare Your Review Package
Send full-desk photos, front and side dimensions, close-ups of corners and damage, the cleaning routine and finish references. For reception desks and fixed furniture, a clear boundary between appearance, substrate repairs and daily-use requirements makes the scope easier to review.
